WEEK 18: THE OVERCOMER

Pastor: Jesse Bradley Series: The One Scripture: John 18:1–40

WEEK 18: Not of This World

Read: John Chapter 18

There will be weeks in our lives when it feels like everything is against us. Jesus was betrayed by Judas. The crowds want to crucify Him. Annas and Pilate are avoiding the truth and fearful of the people. He has committed no sin or crime, and injustice appears to have its victory. Peter denies Jesus three times after saying he would never do that. The devil is active and the demons are battling against heaven. The disciples are scattered and filled with fear and discouragement. How does Jesus have a non-anxious presence? Jesus knows the word and the plan. Jesus trusts the Father and continues to be led by the Holy Spirit. Jesus knows what faithfulness will accomplish. Jesus knows heaven is home, and His kingdom is not here on earth. Jesus sees the big picture and endures in the present moment. There is so much we can learn from Jesus. His hope is indestructible and far greater than all He is facing in this dark sequence. If God is for us, who can be against us? Be strong and take heart because we will see the goodness of God in the land of the living.

Hope Point: Jesus’ kingdom is unstoppable.

Reflection Questions:

1. What does Jesus explain to Peter? (John 18:1-11)
2. Who is Annas and how does he respond to Jesus? (John 18:12-14, 19-24)
3. What can we learn about being bold for Jesus? (John 18:15-18, 25-27)
4. What is the tension that Pilate feels? (John 18:28-34)
5. What is truth? (John 18:35-40)

Who can you share this Scripture with during the upcoming week?

Prayer:

Father God, we ask for Your perspective. Help us, we pray, to see people they way You see people. We want to love what You love. May our hearts break for what breaks Your heart. You are our treasure. We want to set our minds on heavenly things instead of being consumed with materialism. We want to value what is eternal instead of what is shallow and temporary. Our finances belong to You. Help us to invest wisely, we pray, in Jesus' holy name, amen.
