WEEK 19: LOVE BLEEDS

Pastor: Jesse Bradley Series: The One Scripture: John 19:1–42

WEEK 19: Love Bleeds

Read: John Chapter 19

There is no greater love than to lay down your life for someone. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Jesus died so that sinners can be forgiven and live forever with Him. Substitutionary atonements means that He took our place. Justification means that we are declared forgiven in a legal way and the pardon is full. Imputed righteousness means that we receive His holiness as Jesus takes our sins through faith in Him. Salvation is an undeserved gift which is truly amazing grace. Propitiation means that the Father is pleased and His holy wrath has been satisfied through the sacrifice of His Son. The death of Jesus is both necessary and sufficient. In other words: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” The gospel is simple enough that a child understands and believes, while complex enough for us to spend all eternity celebrating and understanding fully what the Lord has done for us. Jesus is worthy of our praise!

Hope Point: The death of Jesus was necessary.

Reflection Questions:

1. How do the crowds influence Pilate and can you relate in any way? (John 19:1-11)
2. What does Pilate decide and why does he choose that path? (John 19:12-16)
3. What details stand out to you about the crucifixion? (John 19:17-27)
4. What does it mean that Jesus finished the work? (John 19:28-37)
5. How was Nicodemus respecting Jesus and taking a risk too? (John 19:38-43)

Who can you share this Scripture with during the upcoming week?

Prayer:

Gracious God, there is no one like You. You defeated death through death. Jesus, you demonstrated Your love in the most sacrificial way. You took our place on the cross and became sin. You gave us a full pardon and Your righteousness. This amazing grace is profound. Our debt has been paid. We are accepted and fully forgiven. Your scars tell the story, Lord. You are worthy. We are known and pursued. Our hearts overflow because of Your mercy. We praise You all of our days, amen.
