WHAT ARE YOUR EYES FIXED ON?

Pastor: Ed Kelley Series: Star of Wonder Scripture: Matthew 2:1–12

Read Matthew 2:1–12

  1. How do the city background, census, timing, and supernatural appearance of the star impact your understanding of the birth of Jesus? Does it seem intentional to you?

  2. How would you react if you saw a star that bright, moving, and compelling to follow? What would be going through your mind?

  3. Why was King Herod “disturbed”? Why was “all Jerusalem” bothered by the prophecy of a Messiah coming to Bethlehem?

  4. Read Luke 15 as Jesus talks about the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and Lost Son. What do you think are the main themes or highlights of each parable? Several constants appear in all three, especially the “rejoicing” when the lost is found. What feelings do you experience when you find something valuable that was lost? What do these parables say about the “urgency” to find the lost item or person?

  5. How important is the incarnation of Jesus to the salvation message? Ed mentioned the Hypostatic Union—what exactly is that?

  6. How important is our focus in life—what our mind’s eye is fixed on? Why did Peter begin to sink after stepping out of the boat (Matt. 14:22)? How easy is it to fix our eyes on something that distracts us from the gospel? What should someone do if they realize their focus is on the wrong thing?

  7. “Star of Wonder” is the theme. The wise men fixed their eyes on the star that night—where are your eyes fixed? What has distracted you in the past from walking in faith? What specific steps have you taken to keep your focus firmly on the Lord?

"The One" vision is that everyone in our church reaches one. Who is the one you are praying for and inviting to church in December?
